Staying at Patong Beach

Some people don’t realize the size of Phuket, which is the biggest island in Thailand and approximately the same size as Singapore. If you don’t choose the right location for your holiday, you could find yourself tucked away in a quiet corner far away from the action. If you want to holiday in Phuket’s most popular holiday destination, that accolade definitely goes to Patong Beach. Make the most of your Phuket golf holiday by staying at Patong Beach.

Convenient Holiday Location

Patong is located on the mid-western coastline of Phuket, and if you are in Phuket to play golf, while at the same time to have a bit of fun, this is the location for you. Patong has been the island’s most popular tourist destination for decades, and is also just a 15-minute drive over to Kathu (below), where you will find some of Phuket’s best courses such as Loch Palm, Red Mountain and Phuket Country Club. The remaining courses on the island are located to the north, which makes Patong a very convenient location for a holiday and golf.

With such a central location, all Phuket’s major attractions are easy to reach, and if you fancy something a bit different, other popular tourist destinations such as Karon, Kata and Kamala are approximately a 20-minute drive from Patong.

Phuket Nightlife and Restaurants

A golf holiday is predominantly about golf, however, you cannot spend every waking hour on the course. Patong is home to the highest concentration of bars, nightlife and restaurants on the island, creating a holiday destination where you will have lots to do, especially at night.

Bangla Road in Patong is widely considered the ultimate place for nightlife in Phuket. This hustling and bustling street in the heart of Patong is closed to vehicles at night and is where you will find all the major bar complexes and nightclubs that makes Patong such a great party place.

With restaurants serving cuisine from the four corners of the globe, you will have lots of choice at your fingertips in Patong, and it’s all about choices, right?

Phuket is an Excellent family location

Patong Beach is home to a nice beach, lots of shopping options and a multitude of excellent restaurants and spas. If you are traveling to Phuket for your golf holiday with your significant other or your family with kids, Patong Beach offers something for everyone. You can go and play golf safe in the knowledge that your family has lots of things to do, so you can concentrate on playing golf.

Choices, choices, choices

Having the best holiday experience possible is all about the choices you have. Patong is home to the best choice of hotels on the island, ranging from cheap and friendly guesthouses to 5-star resorts, and everything in between. Staying in Kathu

As you well know, Phuket is a tropical island, known as one of the premier holiday destinations in the world. Did you know there are 7 main golf courses on Phuket, some of which are located centrally in Kathu, just a 10-minute drive from Patong? This makes Kathu one of the densest golfing areas in Southern Thailand.

Understanding About Kathu

Although at one time in the not-too-distant past, Kathu was more of a place where locals and expats lived, as we move forward it becomes bigger and bigger and more dedicated to serving international clientele. Kathu is most definitely a great place for those looking to catapult themselves amidst the most prime golf terrain in Phuket.

Although the likes of Mission Hills GC are located on the north-east coast of the island and Blue Canyon is in the north near the airport, 3 of the island’s best courses are located in Kathu, while others such as Laguna Phuket GC are a 30-minute drive away.
Kathu, located just a 10-minute drive from Patong, is the spiritual home of Phuket golf. Easily reached from Phuket’s main tourism areas on the west coast, Kathu is home to Phuket Country Club, Loch Palm Golf Club, and also Red Mountain Golf Club, which many believe to now be the
best course on the island.

If you are on holiday for a short time and are looking for a game of golf on the island with the minimum amount of fuss or travel time, the 3 golf clubs in Kathu are a great choice, especially if you are staying in Patong, Karon, Kata or Chalong.

Distances from Kathu:
• 5-minute drive from 3 golf courses
• 10-minute drive to Patong
• 10-minute drive to Central Festival and Tesco Lotus
• 10-minute drive to Phuket Town
• 2-minute drive to international restaurants
• 2-minute drive to local Thai markets

Kata and Karon Beach for Families

If you are visiting Phuket for a golf holiday with your family in tow, you will need a location that is not only more laidback, but also still has many things to see and do. Karon Beach is a 15-minute drive from Patong Beach on the south-western coastline and is known for its understated nightlife scene, a great choice of international and Thai restaurants and most importantly, for its beautiful beach that is much less commercial than Patong. Karon Beach is home to the Hilton and many other high-end resorts, while at the same time offering a very friendly holiday atmosphere.

Just to the south of Karon Beach, you will find Kata Beach with its quaint and welcoming environment. Kata beach really is a great place to relax and enjoy the views out across the Andaman Ocean and is the ultimate place for water-sports, especially surfing from May to October. Kata Beach has many international restaurants and resorts and is a great place for families, couples and singles that seek a peaceful yet convenient Phuket holiday.

Holiday Destinations in South Phuket

If you are looking to stay somewhere less commercial on Phuket, there are some fantastic beachside areas in Southern Phuket, known for their laidback atmospheres and beautiful beaches, but still offering a wide choice of eateries and subtle nightlife options. Popular Phuket beachside destinations in the south include Nai Harn Beach, Kata Noi, Rawai and even Chalong. Although these areas are primarily further away from the island’s golf courses than places such as Patong Beach, nothing can match them in terms of tranquility and the ultimate Thai island getaway experience.

Northern Phuket holiday Destinations

Some of the most interesting up and coming tourism regions in Phuket are located to the north of Patong Beach. Areas such as Kamala Beach, Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach and Laguna Phuket, really do offer a ‘totally tropical’ experience. Kamala and Surin have been popular Phuket holiday destinations for families and couples for many years, while Bang Tao is currently on the up and up. All these areas are similar to the southern locations in terms of enjoying international restaurants and understated nightlife options.

Laguna is one of the most prestigious regions on the island, home to the 5-star Laguna Phuket Estate with its world-class real-estate options and spas, alongside the high-quality Laguna Phuket Golf Course. Being on the north-side of the island ensures you are nearer to the island’s golf courses such as The Lakes and Canyon Course at Blue Canyon Country Club.

3 Affordable Phuket Golf Courses for your Holiday

Now you have found out more about the best areas to stay for your Phuket golf holiday, here are three highly recommended Phuket golf courses that offer the best value for money experience:

Loch Palm GC Phuket Golf Course

Loch Palm is located amidst the beautiful countryside in Kathu, just a 10-minute drive from Patong. Known for its large crystal lake centerpiece and rolling fairways, Loch Palm can be as easy or as difficult as you make it. It’s not a long course, but the many water and sand hazards mean straight hitting is a must, which will give you a great chance of shooting a low score.

This a great course for those who want to enjoy a round of tropical golf and a challenge while without playing a championship course. With so many water hazards coming into play and lots of bunkers, this course is ideal for the mid-level handicapper.

Phuket Country Club Phuket Golf Course

Phuket Country Club is also located in Kathu, and is known for its wide fairways and forgiving greens. Although there are some water hazards on this course, generally speaking, if you are playing well, you will shoot a low score here. It’s not a long course by any stretch of the imagination and makes for the perfect golf holiday course. Although there are some challenging holes on the course such as the picturesque 17th, this is quite a forgiving course that is ideal for mid-range players who want to merge a challenge with a laidback round of golf. Phuket Country club is very popular with local Thai and expat golfers.

Laguna Phuket Golf Club

At one time, Laguna Phuket GC was seen as slightly inferior to Loch Palm and Phuket CC, but not anymore. Over the course of the past couple of years, Laguna Phuket GC, located near to Bang Tao and Surin, has undergone major renovations to the layout and conditions of the course. The course is now up there with the island’s other mid-range courses and could even be known as a mid-to-high level course in this day and age, and is worth a try if you haven’t experienced the new layout. The course is currently in great condition and with its forgiving fairways and flat greens, if you play well, you will score well. This is why Laguna Phuket is so popular with mid-range golfers.
